Valentine’s Day has been celebrated for many centuries and
even though the spirit of giving presents to your loved ones has been practiced
throughout the ages, Valentine’s Day in the 21st century has now
become a marketers dream with almost every conceivable toy, chocolate, flower
and cuddly bear being sold. But it wasn’t always like that with poems and
letters of love being the first “presents” to be given out.
By the middle of the twentieth century people started
giving flowers like roses and chocolates to their loved ones on Valentine's Day
with the chocolates wrapped in a red satin heart shaped box. By the 1980’s the
diamond industry, seeing a lucrative opportunity decided to advertize that jewelry and
in particular diamond encrusted jewelry would be the perfect gift on
Valentine's Day. This spawned an advertizing frenzy in the shape we see today
with everyone advertizing before the 14th of February.
